The earliest rings were made of braided grass, hay, leather, bone and ivory. Fine metals had not been discovered at this time. Today, wedding rings range from inexpensive plan bands to intricate settings studded with fine gems.

The Elizabethans wore huge, elaborate wedding rings on their thumbs. And in the eighteenth century the Roman Catholics wore then on the right hand. Some European women still follow this tradition.
